Former US President Donald Trump secured victory in the pivotal South Carolina primary, triumphing over his Indian-American opponent, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, according to projections by major American media outlets following the closure of polls on Saturday.

This marks Trump's fourth consecutive win in the Republican presidential primaries, following successes in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Notably, Trump's victory in South Carolina holds particular significance as Haley served as the state's governor for two terms.

Reports from major media networks indicate that Trump is poised to claim all 29 of the state's at-large delegates, solidifying his lead over Haley.

The allocation of the remaining 21 delegates will be based on the results from each Congressional district, with three delegates slated for the winner in each of South Carolina's seven districts, as per CNN.

With a total of 1,215 delegates needed to secure the party's nomination, Trump's delegate count now stands at 92, while Haley has garnered 17.

"I just won the South Carolina primary," declared Trump during his victory speech in Columbia, South Carolina, shortly after initial reports showed him leading Haley by a margin of nearly 30 per cent.

As of the announcement, there has been no immediate response from Haley, who was originally scheduled to address supporters at 8 pm local time.
