Trump criticises Netanyahu as Hamas rejects disarmament plan

US President Donald Trump has once again been at odds with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his reactionary statement on Hamas accepting the ceasefire plan in Gaza.

Hamas Refuses Disarmament Despite US Ceasefire Proposal.

US President Donald Trump has once again been at odds with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his reactionary statement on Hamas accepting the ceasefire plan in Gaza.

Hamas, the main fighting group in Gaza, accepted the ceasefire proposal laid out by the United States on Friday.

However, the group has rejected the disarmament plan and stated that it will remain outside the governing process in Gaza. The group also assured the United States of this stance on Sunday, while the Israeli government has demanded the complete disarmament of Hamas.

Hamas said it would not disarm under any pretext or condition, fearing that this could allow the Israeli government to launch future attacks without resistance, which it claims has violated several previous peace agreements.

Trump has reportedly told Netanyahu to discuss the move with Hamas. Netanyahu reacted differently, stating, “This is nothing to celebrate, and it doesn’t mean anything.”

Sources within the White House claimed that Trump was upset and told the Israeli Prime Minister, “I don’t know why you’re always so negative. This is a win. Take it.”

On Saturday, Netanyahu, whose war ambitions are now approaching a deadlock as Trump does not want the conflict to escalate further—particularly with the US midterm elections approaching—voiced his concerns.

Trump’s approval ratings have dropped sharply in recent months due to his support of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. Experts have noted that Trump and his cabinet have faced domestic and international opposition over the war, which has reportedly caused more harm than good for the US.

The US President has called on Israel to cease strikes in Gaza and proposed that Hamas release all remaining hostages within 72 hours of Israel suspending military operations and withdrawing its troops “to the agreed-upon line.”

West Jerusalem has agreed to the prisoner swap but has not officially addressed Trump’s call for Israel to halt its strikes.

Talks on the ceasefire are likely to take place today.
