President Donald Trump has announced plans to reach out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, describing him as a “smart guy” during a recent interview on Fox News.

The remarks come amidst ongoing discussions regarding North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and the strained relations between the United States and the hermit kingdom.

Trump’s statement has sparked renewed 'interest' in the possibility of diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang.

Trump was asked whether he planned to reach out to Kim again. The president confirmed his intentions, stating that he was "eager" to reconnect with the North Korean leader.

Trump, who had previously met with Kim in historic summits in 2018 and 2019, reiterated his belief in the potential for positive relations between the two countries.

“I got along with him,” Trump said of Kim, reflecting on the cordial rapport he had developed with the North Korean leader during their past meetings.

He went on to emphasise that Kim is “not a religious zealot,” further highlighting the pragmatic approach Trump believes is key to their relationship.

Trump’s comments come at a time of heightened concerns about North Korea’s missile tests and the continued stalemate in denuclearisation talks.

Despite these challenges, Trump has maintained that diplomacy remains the most effective avenue for resolving tensions with Pyongyang.

During the interview, Trump was pressed on whether he would initiate talks with Kim once again. “I would certainly do that,” he said, signalling his openness to future diplomatic discussions.

His remarks suggest a potential shift in strategy from the previous administration’s stance of maximum pressure, focusing instead on dialogue and engagement.

The US-North Korea relationship has been tumultuous, with the two countries engaging in a series of back-and-forth tensions, including missile tests, sanctions, and verbal exchanges.

However, the summits between Trump and Kim in 2018 and 2019 offered a glimmer of hope for a breakthrough in the longstanding conflict.

These meetings resulted in symbolic gestures, such as Kim’s pledge to work towards denuclearisation, but concrete progress has been limited.

Trump’s comments are likely to stir mixed reactions from both domestic and international observers.

While some have called for renewed efforts to engage with North Korea, others have expressed scepticism over the effectiveness of further dialogue, given the regime’s track record of defying international demands for denuclearisation.

The president’s willingness to reinitiate talks with Kim reflects his broader foreign policy approach, which prioritises direct engagement with adversaries.

Trump has previously cited his ability to communicate effectively with world leaders, emphasising that personal relationships can play a pivotal role in international diplomacy.

As Trump prepares for his second term in office, it remains to be seen whether he will follow through on his promise to reach out to Kim.

While his administration has pursued sanctions and diplomatic pressure on North Korea, Trump has consistently maintained that he values the personal connection he shares with Kim.

The potential for a third summit between the two leaders is uncertain, as both sides have yet to resolve key issues such as the extent of North Korea’s nuclear disarmament and the lifting of international sanctions.

Nevertheless, Trump’s remarks signal that diplomacy will continue to be a central pillar of his approach to dealing with North Korea.
