US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s latest peace proposals, stating that Tehran is demanding terms he cannot accept, and he has warned that the conflict could drag on for a much longer period.
“I am willing to continue military operations and the ongoing blockade for the next three years if there is a deadlock,” Trump said.
He also cautioned shipping companies and other entities paying tolls or charges to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz that they risk facing US sanctions.
A recent poll conducted by a leading US media outlet indicated limited public support for a ground invasion of Iran, with nearly 61 pc of respondents believing it would be a “catastrophic mistake".
Meanwhile, official sources confirmed that the United States is preparing to withdraw around 5,000 troops stationed in Germany amid rising tensions with the key European ally over the Iran conflict.
The Pentagon reportedly made the decision on Friday, days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised Iran for “humiliating” the US during negotiations.
Sources said President Trump is reacting strongly to recent comments by some allies.
Trump has sharply criticised the European Union for refusing to confront Iran or join the US-Israel military campaign, even threatening to pull all US troops out of Europe.
According to reports, Trump’s threats to withdraw troops from European countries caught the US military by surprise.
Growing domestic pressure and strong anti-war sentiments have led several European nations to maintain a largely neutral and silent stance on the escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
