The first criminal trial of a former US president commenced with Donald Trump pleading not guilty to a 34-count indictment related to hush money payments. The charges stem from a payment his attorney, Michael Cohen, made to an adult film actor to influence the 2016 presidential election.

In a remarkable split-screen spectacle, Trump, now a presumptive Republican nominee for the White House, navigates both his legal battle and campaign for office. He portrays himself as a target of politically motivated prosecutions aimed at thwarting his candidacy.

The trial, unfolding amid a closely contested presidential election, presents a challenge in jury selection due to Trump's notoriety. Over half of the initial jury pool expressed inability to be impartial, illustrating the difficulty in finding unbiased jurors.

Trump's legal team maintains that the charges against him are part of a broader "weaponization of law enforcement" by Democratic prosecutors. Despite facing multiple indictments, Trump remains defiant, denouncing the trial as "political persecution."

The proceedings have not been without controversy. Trump's lawyers sought to delay the trial, alleging a tainted jury pool and negative publicity. However, an appeals judge denied the emergency request, underscoring the urgency of the trial.

Prosecutors argue that fair and impartial jurors can be found despite Manhattan's overwhelmingly Democratic population. The prospective jurors, identified only by number, undergo rigorous questioning about their views on Trump and their ability to be impartial.

While Trump faces the prospect of up to four years in prison if convicted, the trial's outcome remains uncertain. His legal team continues to challenge the charges, maintaining that the payments were legitimate expenses, not a cover-up.

As the trial progresses, it remains a pivotal moment for Trump, whose legacy as a businessman-turned-politician is at stake. Amidst the legal battle, Trump is determined to leverage the proceedings to bolster his narrative of victimhood and political persecution.
