Shortly after Russia carried out its nuclear-capable cruise missile test, United States President Donald Trump said that the test was not appropriate and was a violation.
He said he wished to settle the war in Ukraine as soon as possible; the war, he believes, could have ended within “one week but has now extended to the fourth year.” “That’s what Putin should also be focused on, rather than testing the new weapons in the midst of the war,” Trump said.
On Sunday, Putin announced a successful final test of the newly developed Burevestnik missile, which he said has “unlimited range”. The missile test has raised serious concern in Washington’s defence circles, which view the development as a serious threat.
Moscow already possesses a range of hypersonic intercontinental missiles with ranges up to 12 thousand kilometres. The missiles that can travel 7 times the speed of sound and are capable of hitting any country in the world. The test has upset Trump, as he wanted to add further pressure on Russia to agree to a peace deal with Ukraine. The talks were likely scheduled to take place Friday last week.
Trump cancelled the talks, saying he did not want to waste his time with Putin without the Russian president showing a serious commitment to ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump had promised to quickly end the Ukraine war upon his return to the White House in January, but talks between Moscow and Kyiv have stalled despite the US president’s mediation efforts.
