US President Donald Trump has signalled a possible easing of tensions with Iran, announcing a temporary pause on planned military strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure following what he described as “very good and productive conversations” between the two sides.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had directed the US Department of War to “postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period”, citing the constructive nature of ongoing talks. He added that the decision would depend on the progress of negotiations expected to continue through the week.

The development marks a sharp shift from the administration’s earlier stance. Just a day ago, Trump had warned Tehran that the United States would “hit and obliterate” its power plants if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

The latest move suggests a tentative turn towards diplomacy after days of escalating rhetoric that had raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Iran had responded strongly to Trump’s earlier ultimatum, warning of severe retaliation in the event of any attack. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said key infrastructure could be “irreversibly destroyed” if targeted, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps cautioned that energy facilities in countries hosting US bases would become “lawful” targets.

Tehran had also threatened to keep the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments, closed until its damaged power infrastructure was restored, raising concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies.

The pause in military action, even if temporary, is being seen as an opportunity for both sides to de-escalate tensions and explore a diplomatic path forward.
