United States President Donald Trump is set to announce a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia on Friday, reports said. Trump is likely to host Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House today. Both leaders will be attending events in the Oval Office and State Dining Room, officials have said.
Armenia aims to develop a 43-kilometre transit corridor to be named after US President Donald Trump, called the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity”, which will likely give access to western countries.
Both Aliyev and Pashinyan met in Dubai earlier last month, where the two leaders discussed efforts to normalise relations after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War. Trump confirmed during the meeting with the NATO secretary Mark Rutte in the Oval Office last month that the negotiations to end the disputes between the two neighbours are moving in the right direction and towards a “peaceful conclusion”.

Bilateral relations between the two former soviet republics have remained tense and fragile since the disintegration of the great USSR. The Armenian military immediately occupied Azerbaijan’s territory in 1991, a part which was internationally recognised as the territory of Azerbaijan.
Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during a 44-day war in the fall of 2020, which ended after a Russian-brokered peace agreement that opened the door to normalisation and demarcation talks.
