United States President Donald Trump has approved the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to “protect the assets and officers in Chicago, which has seen several anti-ICE protests recently.
Trump made several announcements earlier where he threatened to mobilise the National Guard against the protesters, whom he believes are illegal aliens and must be sent back to their native countries. The deployment is part of Trump’s broader militarised crackdown. while republicans praise the step, democrats have protested against the ICE crackdowns and also believe that it was trump mission to take control of the Democratic-run states.
The decision was announced immediately after a judge temporarily suspended a similar deployment to Portland, Oregon. Trump has already sent National Guard troops to Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Memphis to crack down on what he termed "rampant" crime and has threatened to do the same for Chicago, New Orleans and Portland, among others.
