At least two people have been killed and dozens wounded following deadly clashes that broke out between Syrian government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday.

The violence broke out in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo after both sides accused each other of triggering the fresh escalation.

Blaming the SDF, Syria’s Interior Ministry claimed that fighters affiliated with the group “committed an act of treachery” against the Damascus-controlled security forces and attacked several checkpoints in the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhoods before retreating.

However, the allegations were quickly rebuked by the SDF, which claimed that it had long “handed over its positions to the Internal Security Forces in accordance with the April 1 agreement”.

The group, however, added that the incident had arisen between fragmented factions affiliated with the Damascus government and accused its “loyal groups” of besieging its neighbourhoods for at least four months now.

The Syrian government, led by de facto leader Ahmed Al Sharaa, a former HTS commander, had retained control over Kurdish neighbourhoods back in April 2025.

Later, Damascus announced that Kurdish fighters would be included in Syrian military structures, although the implementation has stalled now and the SDF remains in control of roughly a fourth of the Syrian territory.

Over the past few months, multiple armed clashes have been reported between the Syrian government and the SDF militia.

The latest incident occurred hours after Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Damascus, accusing the SDF of failing to adhere to the agreement and urging it to “cease to be an obstacle to Syria achieving stability, unity and prosperity.”
