An air collision involving two US fighter jets that occurred mid-air marked the abrupt termination of an air show held at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho on Sunday.

The unfortunate event took place around 12:30 PM when the much-awaited Gunfighter Skies Air Show was being held in Idaho. The two planes, which were EA-18G Growlers, collided mid-air at a point approximately two miles from the periphery of the base. Videos taken by the witnesses and uploaded online depicted the collision of the two aircraft and their ensuing disintegration as they left a black plume of smoke behind them.

Amidst the chaos, the crowd witnessed four parachutes deploying and drifting towards the ground. An announcer over the public address system quickly reassured the thousands in attendance that all four crew members had successfully managed to eject. The US Navy subsequently confirmed that all personnel involved had escaped safely before impact.

Emergency crews rushed to the crash site immediately, and base officials promptly cancelled the remainder of Sunday's scheduled events. A spokesperson for Mountain Home Air Force Base stated that first responders remained on the scene to secure the area, whilst an investigation was officially launched to determine the precise cause of the accident. Local police also confirmed that the base was placed on lockdown as a standard safety precaution whilst authorities handled the initial aftermath.

The crash has cast a shadow over an event that organisers had spent nearly two years meticulously planning. This weekend marked the return of the Gunfighter Skies Air Show for the first time in eight years, drawing immense crowds eager to see the aerial displays.

Regrettably, Sunday's incident is not the first time tragedy or near-misses have struck the Idaho base during public exhibitions. The crash has inevitably revived memories of past accidents at Mountain Home air shows, including a fatal incident in 2018 when a hang glider pilot lost their life after crashing directly onto the runway. In 2003, a high-profile US Air Force Thunderbirds jet crashed during a performance at the base, though the pilot in that instance also managed a miraculous escape by ejecting just seconds before the aircraft hit the ground.
