As announced by the Russian Defence Ministry on Thursday, the Ukrainian Navy’s reconnaissance ship Simferopol, reportedly the largest ship commissioned by the country over the last 10 years, was hit and sunk in a naval drone strike. Simferopol was destroyed by an unmanned high-speed Russian boat at the mouth of the Danube River, killing one crew member and leaving several others injured.
The attack was confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities.
A Laguna-class medium reconnaissance ship, equipped for radio, electronic, radar, and optical surveillance, was struck in the Danube River delta in Ukraine’s Odessa region, the Russian Defence Ministry said, as per a media outlet, which then added, quoting a TASS report, that this was the first successful use of a sea drone to take out a Ukrainian Navy vessel.
The Simferopol, launched in 2019, was inducted into the Ukrainian Navy in 2021.
