Ukrainian Police gunned down an armed gunman who had killed six people and taken four others hostage in Kyiv, officials confirmed on Sunday. The attack took place on Saturday in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district, where the assailant opened fire on civilians in the street before barricading himself inside a nearby supermarket, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on Telegram.
According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the Police had to neutralise the gunman since all efforts and negotiations had failed.
“We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside,” Klymenko said, adding, “We even offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond.”
“After 40 minutes of negotiations, the police were given the order to neutralise the attacker,” he said.
Besides, 10 others were injured in the shootout, which included a child and four hostages, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the attacker was a 58-year-old born in Moscow, who was carrying a legally obtained gun and had approached licensing authorities in December 2025 to renew his weapons permit. He had submitted a valid medical certificate at the time, which has now come under the scanner of Ukrainian investigation agencies.
Zelenskyy offered his condolences to the families of the victims, saying he had instructed officials to make all verified information publicly available.
“We expect a swift investigation,” he wrote.
