The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has warned that at least one million women and girls are facing mass starvation due to Israel’s ongoing blockade, which has devastated the lives of children.
In a post on X, the agency said, “Women and girls in Gaza are facing mass starvation, violence and abuse. They are being forced to adopt increasingly dangerous survival strategies, such as venturing out in search of food and water at the extreme risk of being killed.”
The agency stressed the urgent need to restore the large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into the enclave.
Earlier reports suggested that venturing out for food in Gaza has proven deadly for hundreds of people, as Israeli snipers and armed forces have targeted and shot aid seekers.
Israeli forces have so far killed 1,760 people near aid distribution centres across the devastated northern strip since a controversial humanitarian programme, run jointly by the US and Israel’s GHF, began distributing aid on May 27.

Israel has enforced a total blockade of Gaza since March 2, blocking humanitarian aid and pushing the enclave into famine despite thousands of trucks waiting at the border.
Earlier this month, the UN World Food Programme also warned that one-third of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents had gone without food for several days.
Israel has killed nearly 61,900 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine.
