The UN Security Council has voted out a proposal to continue sanctions relief for Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal.
The vote has raised the likelihood that the penalty will be re-imposed by the end of this month.
The E3 nations, which include the UK, France and Germany, have begun the process to resume the sanctions after they had come to believe that Tehran violated the deal. The deal involves key EU powers and the United States.
The voting took place on Friday. The draft resolution failed to get much support for adoption, as only four of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favour of Iran, which included China and Russia.
At the meeting, the Western nations called on Iran to seriously commit to a diplomatic solution if Tehran wishes to avoid the re-imposition of the sanctions.
Meanwhile, Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused the Western nations of undermining the dialogue, as he cited the ongoing negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He said that Iran does so even after the illegal Israeli and US attacks on the nuclear research facilities.
A similar statement was made by the top Iranian diplomat and foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, after he promised to hold consultations with the Iranian Supreme National Council on the matter.
He said he was hopeful of securing a deal with the IAEA based on mutual understanding despite the agency’s inconsistent role during the Israeli bombing of the nuclear sites.
The deadline for the process of re-imposing the sanctions is by the end of next week. It remains unclear whether any concessions will be made between the two sides before then.
