Iran’s foreign ministry slammed the United States for completely disregarding genuine peace and security in the West Asia region, warning that regional countries must draw lessons from the US-Israel war on Iran. Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that the US has always attempted to undermine peace efforts whenever they are in advanced stages.
The remark comes at a time when Iran is holding the state funeral for the assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed along with 48 top civil and military leaders in Tehran back in February this year.
Officials said that more than 20 million people are expected to attend the funeral of the supreme leader. Ceremonies and funeral processions for Khamenei will start on Saturday in Tehran and end on July 9, with the former supreme leader laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad.
Iran’s state broadcaster aired a statement from the country’s military command, stating that vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz must adhere to routes designated by the Iranian armed forces or they will face a “forceful response”.
Meanwhile, an Iranian lawmaker has urged Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to reconsider Iran's position on the nuclear doctrine in light of the threat issued by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who warned of an assassination attempt on the new supreme leader.
In a post on X, Ebrahim Rezaei, a spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, said the threat made by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz provided “a valid and compelling reason for reconsidering the nuclear doctrine as well as Article Eight of the Islamabad Accord".
Under Article Eight of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, Tehran agreed never to procure or develop a nuclear weapon.
