US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor arrived in India on Friday amid an estrangement in ties between India and the US over trade.
In Delhi, Gor, who is to take charge on January 12, 2026, wrote in a post on X about the “incredible opportunities” that lay ahead for the two countries.
“Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!” he wrote.
Gor’s arrival was marked by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterating only a few hours earlier that India remains committed to negotiating with the US for a “balanced” trade pact. This came after US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, said that the India-US deal did not happen because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call US President Donald Trump to seal the deal.
In another development, Trump, on Thursday, backed a Bill that mandates up to 500 per cent tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, and withdrew the US from the India-led International Solar Alliance (ISA) amongst at least 65 other international organisations.
Gor’s last visit to India was in October, 2025, when he arrived on a six-day trip, days after being appointed by the Senate. He had met Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar then.
India and the US have remained in continuous talks for the bilateral trade agreement, with both Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, and Jaishankar visiting Washington DC last year for follow-up discussions on the trade pact.
