US and Iran exchanged missile strikes despite a ceasefire, raising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and uranium dispute.

The United States and Iran exchanged missile strikes on Friday night, with clashes continuing into early Saturday as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the uranium issue escalated once again. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out attacks on “enemy bases in the region” using aerospace missiles.

The United States military stated that Iran fired seven missiles towards Gulf neighbours Kuwait and Bahrain, but none reached their targets.

Earlier, US forces shot down four Iranian drones launched towards the Strait of Hormuz and struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites on Qeshm Island and Goruk on Iran’s southern coast.

“As per initial assessment, six of the missiles launched by Iran were intercepted and downed while the seventh did not reach its intended target,” CENTCOM said.

“There are currently no reports of harm to US personnel, and Iranian claims of damaging US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain are false,” it added.

Although the ceasefire between the US and Iran remains officially in place, the repeated skirmishes in recent times have posed a greater threat to regional and global peace.

Earlier on Friday, US President Donald Trump was asked about the slow pace of negotiations. He compared the Iran issue to the Vietnam War, saying, "The Iran issue was just three months old, whereas the Vietnam War took nearly 19 years to settle. So I am in no hurry for settlement or agreement.”

Experts believe the US is trying to pressure Iran through additional sanctions, a naval blockade, and economic uncertainty to force Tehran to give up its enriched uranium and agree to a peace deal.
