US authorities investigating the deadly Brown University attack have released a person of interest (POI) who was detained on Sunday over suspicions of his involvement in the attack.
The attacker killed 2 students and injured more in the aftermath of the shooting at the Ivy League university. The authorities released a "person of interest" on Monday. The probing officials late on Sunday said that the investigation has taken them in a completely different direction, with the actual suspect remaining at large.
"We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community," Mayor Brett Smiley said. Police officials on Sunday said that they detained a man in his 20s, while Providence authorities said the person of interest was in his thirties.
The investigators did not mention or specify any further details about the suspect. Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez said the coordinated efforts of the law enforcement agencies had led to the initial detention within 12 hours.
He said it had been "all hands on deck" as police worked with various federal partners and officers from different municipalities, calling the coordinated response outstanding work.
Perez further noted that ‘seamless coordination among the agencies made rapid progress possible in this particular case.’ According to investigators, the gunmen opened fire as students were appearing for final exams.
