In a recent escalation of military actions in Yemen, a coalition of US and British naval forces launched an airstrike against a Houthi site in the city of Hodeidah.

The strike occurred early on Sunday morning, targeting a site in the Al-Luhayyah area of the city. However, media reports have not disclosed further details about the strike or any casualties, and the coalition has not made an official comment on the operation.

This airstrike is part of an ongoing series of attacks by the US-led coalition against Houthi military positions. According to the US Central Command, just a day before, the coalition forces conducted precision airstrikes on missile storage facilities and a command-and-control site operated by the Houthis in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

In addition to these airstrikes, the coalition also reported the interception and destruction of multiple Houthi drones and an anti-ship missile over the Red Sea, which is a strategic waterway.

The timing of the airstrikes coincided with a ballistic missile attack launched by the Houthis on Israel, which targeted central Tel Aviv. The missile attack injured at least 20 individuals, further intensifying tensions in the region.

In retaliation to such actions, the US-led naval coalition has been carrying out regular air raids on Houthi targets since January, in a bid to curb the group's growing influence and military activities.

Amid these operations, the coalition also faced an unexpected incident. During the same period, a US Navy F/A-18 fighter jet was accidentally shot down by friendly fire over the Red Sea.

Two pilots aboard the aircraft were ejected and recovered alive, although one sustained minor injuries. This incident highlights the risks and complications that arise during military operations, particularly in complex conflict zones like Yemen.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have intensified their attacks on Israeli targets, including missile and drone strikes on Israeli cities, as well as disrupting shipping activities linked to Israel in the Red Sea.

These actions have prompted a robust response from the US and British naval forces, who have been conducting retaliatory strikes to limit the Houthis' capabilities and prevent further escalation.

The situation in Yemen remains volatile, with the Houthi-controlled areas continuing to face sustained attacks from the coalition. The city of Hodeidah, being a key location on the Red Sea coast, has seen multiple strikes targeting Houthi military infrastructure.

The Houthi authorities have described these actions as acts of aggression and have vowed to retaliate. The ongoing conflict in Yemen has further complicated the geopolitical landscape of the region, drawing in various international players and heightening tensions.

In a broader context, the airstrike on the Houthi site is part of a larger conflict that has been unfolding for several years in Yemen. The war, which began in 2014, has involved multiple factions, including the internationally recognised government of Yemen, the Houthi rebels, and various foreign powers.

The US and its allies, including the UK, have supported the Yemeni government in its fight against the Houthis, while the latter have received backing from Iran.
