The accusation that the US was involved in the ousting of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been dismissed as "laughable" and "false" by the US.
Hasina left her position and sought refuge in India on August 5 after facing widespread protests against her government's controversial job quota system. Following her removal, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was established in the country.
"That’s laughable. Any implication that the United States was involved in Sheikh Hasina’s resignation is absolutely false," Vedant Patel, the principal deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, addressed Hasina's allegations on Tuesday. She accused the United States of orchestrating mass protests that resulted in her ouster after weeks of violence.
"We have seen a lot of disinformation in recent weeks, and we remain incredibly committed to strengthening information integrity across the digital ecosystem, especially with our partners in South Asia," he said.
The United States will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, and it was emphasised that President Joe Biden consistently speaks loudly and clearly on human rights issues.
