US denies new AMRAAM missile deliveries to Pakistan

The embassy emphasised that such contract announcements are routine in US defense procurement and warned against any misinterpretation of the modification as a capability enhancement.

US Embassy in India clarifies missile contract reports, denies upgrades to Pakistan’s capabilities.

The United States refuted media reports claiming that it had approved the sale of advanced AIM-120 air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs) to Pakistan on Friday. The US Embassy issued a statement clarifying that such reports were “false” and explicitly stated, “no part of this referenced contract modification is for deliveries of new Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) to Pakistan.”

However, the embassy noted that the contract in question pertains to “sustainment and spares for several countries, including Pakistan.” This suggests the possibility that the contract could involve replenishing missile stocks that Pakistan may have recently used. The clarification comes in the context of Operation Sindoor, a recent air battle involving the forces of both Pakistan and India.

Over the past few days, various media outlets and regional publications reported that Pakistan was poised to receive AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles from the US, which could enhance its F-16 fleet and potentially shift the regional aerial balance. These reports sparked speculation about a US-driven capability upgrade for Pakistan amid improving bilateral ties.

The US Embassy’s statement directly counters these narratives, emphasising that the contract is focused on “sustainment” to support existing systems rather than providing new capabilities. This underscores Washington’s awareness of concerns regarding any perceived shift in regional military dynamics. The embassy further clarified that such contract announcements, which cover updates, spare parts, and maintenance for multiple nations, are routine in US defence procurement.

The press release included a link to a War.gov page to provide further clarity on the correct interpretation of the contract.
