US hits Iran's Isfahan with 1,000-kg bunker-buster bombs

The timing of the strike appears to be a direct retaliation for an Iranian attack on the Kuwaiti oil tanker Al-Salmi near the Dubai coast.

In a shocking turn of events in the West Asia conflict, the United States has carried out a devastating strike on one of the biggest ammunition factories in the Iranian city of Isfahan. The strike, which used 2,000-pound "bunker-buster" bombs, targeted the reinforced and underground structures in the heart of Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. The strike came just hours after President Donald Trump hinted at the possible wind-down of the offensive, indicating a "hit-hard-before-leaving" strategy.

Trump himself posted the video on his Truth Social platform, where viewers can see a series of massive explosions lighting up the night sky. The video, while not carrying any description, was later verified to be the Isfahan raid. The secondary explosions and thick plumes of smoke seen in the video indicate that the explosives housed at the facility were successfully ignited. Isfahan has gained greater strategic importance in the region with the assessment that Tehran might have moved a considerable amount of its highly enriched uranium, estimated to be around 540kg, to deep underground bunkers in the city.

Bunker-busters, such as the penetrator munitions used in this raid, are specifically designed to drill through metres of reinforced concrete and rock before detonating. While the Isfahan strike reportedly utilised smaller variants, the US arsenal includes the monstrous 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). Carried exclusively by the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, the MOP is the ultimate tool for neutralising deeply buried nuclear or command sites that are otherwise unreachable by conventional ordnance.

The timing of the strike appears to be a direct retaliation for an Iranian attack on the Kuwaiti oil tanker Al-Salmi near the Dubai coast. Although no casualties were reported in the tanker incident, the threat of an oil spill and the expansion of hostilities into civilian energy corridors have put the region on edge. Despite this flare-up, White House officials suggest that Trump is keen to conclude the active military campaign within a strict four-to-six-week timeline.

According to reports, the President has decided that if the primary goals of hobbling Iran’s navy and missile stocks are achieved, the US may wind down hostilities even if the Strait of Hormuz remains partially obstructed. Under this plan, the task of reopening the vital waterway would be shifted to diplomatic pressure or a coalition of European and Gulf allies, allowing Washington to exit the direct kinetic phase of the conflict sooner rather than later.
