The Israeli military officials said on Sunday that they carried out a series of airstrikes in Beirut, targeting what it described as Hezbollah military infrastructure in the Lebanese capital. Witnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising over parts of the city following the strikes, underscoring renewed tensions along Israel's northern front.

According to a statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the operation was launched in response to recent Hezbollah attacks on communities and military positions in northern Israel. Israeli officials maintained that the strikes were aimed at degrading the Iran-backed group's operational capabilities and preventing further cross-border attacks.

The latest escalation comes amid growing concerns that the conflict could widen further across the region. Israel struck Hezbollah-linked targets in Beirut's southern suburbs just a week ago, an action that was followed by retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Iran against Israel. The exchange highlighted the increasingly interconnected nature of the conflicts involving Israel, Iran and Tehran-backed armed groups across the Middle East.

Iran, widely regarded as Hezbollah's principal military and financial supporter, has repeatedly condemned Israeli operations in Lebanon. Tehran has also insisted that any future ceasefire arrangement involving the United States and Iran must include a halt to Israeli military actions against Lebanon and Hezbollah. Iranian officials argue that regional stability cannot be achieved without addressing ongoing hostilities on multiple fronts.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have remained high since early March, when Hezbollah launched missiles into northern Israel on March 2. The attack came two days after joint US-Israeli military action against Iran, an operation that further inflamed regional tensions and contributed to a broader conflict involving multiple actors across the Middle East.

Analysts warn that the continued cycle of attacks and reprisals risks drawing additional countries and armed groups into the confrontation. While diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have continued behind the scenes, Sunday's strikes in Beirut serve as a reminder of the fragile security situation and the potential for further escalation in the region.

Neither Lebanese authorities nor Hezbollah immediately provided detailed assessments of the damage or potential casualties resulting from the latest Israeli strikes. However, the developments are expected to intensify international calls for restraint as fears grow over the possibility of a wider regional conflict.
