Six US Congressmen have written to Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging an investigation into the previous Department of Justice (DoJ)’s decision to indict officials from the Adani Group. The lawmakers questioned why the Biden administration pursued legal action against the Indian conglomerate instead of allowing Indian authorities to handle the matter.
The Adani Group had previously rejected the DoJ’s move as baseless when it was named in a case of alleged misconduct in November last year.
In their letter, US lawmakers Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin criticized the Biden administration’s decision, calling it a "misguided crusade" that risked damaging America’s relationship with India, a key geopolitical ally.
Questioning the DOJ’s actions
The lawmakers argued that the case was based on allegations of bribery in India, involving individuals located in India. They stated that instead of deferring the matter to Indian authorities, the Biden administration chose to indict Adani executives despite no direct impact on US interests.
They claimed there was "no compelling reason" for the DoJ to pursue the case in a way that could strain US-India relations unless there were political motives involved.
Concerns over economic impact
The Congressmen also highlighted the economic relationship between the US and India, emphasising that Donald Trump’s return to the White House signaled a renewed focus on economic growth.
They warned that unnecessary legal actions against companies that invest billions and create thousands of jobs could discourage investors from contributing to the US economy.
They argued that the indictment caused more harm than good, potentially weakening America’s economic partnerships.

US-India relations at risk
The lawmakers praised former President Trump’s efforts in strengthening US-India ties alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They warned that politically motivated actions by government agencies, influenced by left-wing megadonors, could undo years of diplomatic progress.
They also suggested that such "reckless decisions" could benefit adversaries like China, which seeks to expand its influence through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and challenge America’s economic position.
The lawmakers demanded that Attorney General Pam Bondi review the Biden DoJ’s actions and provide them with all records related to the case. They stressed the need for transparency and accountability, seeking to determine if political motivations played a role in the indictment.
"We request you investigate the Biden DoJ’s conduct and would appreciate you sharing with us all records pertaining to this case, for a coordinated effort in uncovering the truth," they wrote.
