The United States military’s 5th Fleet, currently stationed in the Gulf of Oman, has carried out fresh strikes on Iran days after Tehran attacked a Cyprus-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz without any justification, CENTCOM said on Saturday. US Central Command said that it had completed its seventh consecutive night of strikes on Iran, deploying “fighter aircraft, aerial drones and warships” to hit the country’s surveillance sites and military logistics infrastructure, along with underground weapons storage and maritime facilities.
The southern cities of Lar, Jask, Sirik, Bushehr, and Bandar Abbas have reportedly been targeted, along with Qeshm Island, Ahvaz, and the central city of Yazd.
Confirming the latest round of strikes, Iranian sources said the strikes killed three people and wounded eight others in Hormozgan province, which borders the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, CENTCOM also rebuked the claims of the IRGC of attacking two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s army says it has hit US assets in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait early on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan have activated their air defence units to neutralise the incoming threats from Iran, including drones and cruise missiles.
As a result of the latest escalations, the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to the lowest level in three weeks, amid renewed fighting between the US and Iran, according to tracking site Marine Traffic.
Just eight ships were confirmed to have crossed through the monitored section of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, “down from 15 a day earlier". MarineTraffic said in an update.
