The United States has imposed sanctions on approximately 400 entities and individuals globally, including 19 Indian companies, for allegedly aiding Russia’s military efforts in its ongoing war against Ukraine.

This announcement aims to disrupt Russia's access to critical military technologies, particularly advanced microelectronics.

The US Department of the Treasury has stated that the sanctions extend beyond Indian companies, targeting firms from China, Switzerland, Thailand, and Turkey that have supplied essential technology and equipment to Russia.

Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo stated, “The United States and our allies will continue to take decisive action across the globe to stop the flow of critical tools and technologies that Russia needs to wage its illegal and immoral war against Ukraine.”

He further added, “As evidenced by today's action, we are unyielding in our resolve to diminish and degrade Russia's ability to equip its war machine and stop those seeking to aid their efforts through circumvention or evasion of our sanctions and export controls.”

The sanctions particularly focus on disrupting Russia’s procurement of key technologies and components from third-party nations, with dual-use goods, such as microelectronics and CNC (computer numerical control) items, highlighted as high-priority targets.

Countries identified as suppliers of these critical items include China, India, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and the UAE.

Concerns over China’s ongoing export of dual-use goods to Russia have prompted the US Treasury to designate several Chinese companies involved in producing CNC items essential for Russia’s military operations.

The aim is to cut off backchannels and sanctions-evasion networks that bolster Russia’s war machinery.

In response to the sanctions, Indian Minister of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that India is aware of the sanctions imposed on the 19 companies and emphasised the nation's robust legal and regulatory framework for strategic trade and non-proliferation controls.

He stated, “We have seen these reports of US sanctions. India has a robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade and non-proliferation controls.”

Jaiswal further clarified that these sanctions do not appear to involve any violations of Indian law by the affected companies, saying, “Our understanding is that the sanction, transactions and companies are not in violation of Indian laws.”

India will work closely with relevant departments and agencies to inform Indian firms about applicable export control provisions and new measures that may affect them.
