After Israel conducted its recent airstrikes on Iran, the US State Department has said that these tit-for-tat actions between Israel and Iran must come to a meaningful halt as the stability and peace of the region are under threat.
On Friday, Israel conducted a precision strike against military targets in Iran. The strike was a response to an October 1 attack where Iran launched about 200 ballistic missiles into Israel.
Although the Iranian attack, as said by Washington, did not do any significant damage, the Iranian side contended that their attack was calculated and the majority of their loaded missiles successfully penetrated all air defences of Israel.
US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III assured the American ironclad commitment to Israel's security and support for its right to defend itself. In a warning to Iran, he said, Iran should not respond to Israel's strikes but should instead consider this the end of the two-nation exchange.
"We believe that this should be the end of this tit-for-tat," said Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh during a meeting today with reporters.
"The secretary also discussed the opportunities that now exist to use diplomacy to dial down tensions in the region.
This starts with a hostage release and cease-fire deal in Gaza and an agreement in Lebanon that allows civilians on both sides of the blue line to return safely to their homes," Singh said.
While the war in Gaza and Lebanon continues to deprive civilians and cause further displacement, the US government has yet to apply necessary diplomatic pressure on Israel to end the war.
The experts suggest that with the majority of the Hamas leadership, including Hezbollah’s top brass, gone from the scene, it’s high time that Israel, Hamas, and Lebanon strive to strike a peace deal advocated by Qatar and Egypt
