US Senate passes $895 bn Defence policy bill.

The US Senate has gone past the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) for the financial year 2025 with assurance. This bill-the important one-now awaits President Joe Biden's signature to turn into law.

The bill, totalling $895 billion, has already been passed to the House of Representatives, and on 85 to 14 votes, was passed in the Senate. The new military spending would represent a yield-with-a-nod 1 percent increase over the previous year's budget of $886 billion.

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont was among those who voted "NO" on the measure during his moment at the well of the Senate. While partisan clouds of criticism loomed over questions of military spending, these also highlighted homelessness, hunger, and the current plight of many seniors regarding personal finance.

In that regard, he doubted whether the enormous amounts for armed forces would serve the American people best by ignoring all other real needs.

In Senate comments, he said, "While half a million Americans are homeless, children go hungry, and old people cannot afford to heat their homes in winter, we do not need to spend almost a trillion dollars on the military."

While Sanders would have complained against the sheer amount allocated to military spending in this way, the bill also contains matters that most likely would stir great debate among parts.

One key and often contested provision is that of health insurance coverage for military members and their dependent children who receive gender-affirming medical procedures.

The current compromise bill bans the Pentagon's TRICARE program from covering transgender children of service members, a provision pushed by Republicans.

Section 9077 prohibits limitations on health coverage for adults receiving gender-affirming care and prohibits funding from being used for service members needing to travel for an abortion.

In addition to other priorities, the NDAA would also improve the welfare conditions for the military with the promise of a handsome pay rise for service members.

The legislation provides for a 14.5 percent pay increase for the lowest ranks in the armed forces and an average of 4.5 percent for the rest in the pay scheme. This pay increment is created within the framework of the necessary requirements to sustain military personnel against inflation and rising living costs.

The bill also earmarks substantial expenditures for the Indo-Pacific region, where the US continues to invest its strategic defense priorities, for military capabilities amounting to $15.6 billion.

It also extends joint military exercises between the US and Israel, which indicate the seriousness with which ongoing instability in the Middle East is concerned.

While, however, the bill has prohibited the Pentagon from making reports on casualties caused by Hamas activities, the step has got mixed public responses at present times with severely uproaring conflicts in the region.

One of the primary functions of the NDAA is to provide authorizations for Pentagon defense programs for the next fiscal year, although such authorizations are additional to those funding DOD for the coming year and will require a separate spending bill passed by Congress before September 30, 2025.

This will include funding for new weapons and equipment purchases, ensuring the US military maintains its edge on the global stage.
