According to the American military, the operation was a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.

The United States has launched a series of military strikes against Iranian targets after President Donald Trump accused Tehran of shooting down an American Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz. The incident represents a severe escalation in the long-standing hostility between the two nations, sparking widespread fear of a broader conflagration in the Gulf region that could threaten global energy supplies.

According to the American military, the operation was a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression. US officials stated that the Apache helicopter was brought down by an Iranian one-way attack drone. Although President Trump confirmed that both American pilots survived the crash without injury, he vowed that Washington would not let the action go unanswered. As the retaliatory operation unfolded, US Central Command characterised the strikes as self-defence measures, targeting several Iranian air defence systems, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites surrounding the strategic waterway. American forces have since announced that this specific round of strikes has been concluded.

Early on Wednesday, powerful explosions reverberated across parts of southern Iran. Local news agencies reported blasts in the eastern regions of Hormozgan province as well as the vital port city of Bandar Abbas. State media also confirmed projectile impacts in Sirik and reported that Qeshm Island had come under fire, indicating that the American operation spanned multiple locations near the shipping lanes through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes.

Prior to the strikes, Iranian state media had quoted a military source insisting that no offensive air operations had been conducted by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz over the preceding 24 hours, warning of a decisive response to any hostility. Following the American bombardment, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi avoided addressing the helicopter downing directly but remarked that foreign militaries operating near Iran faced constant perils from miscalculations and crossfire, suggesting the best solution to reduce risk was for them to leave the region entirely.

Araghchi subsequently issued a sterner warning to the United States against further military intervention. He asserted that Washington had chosen to test Iran's resolve despite facing previous defeats on the battlefield, adding that Iran’s armed forces would leave no attack or threat unanswered. Invoking regional history, the Foreign Minister pointedly remarked that the Persian Gulf held many examples of the dire fates awaiting intruding outsiders.

In swift retaliation for the bombardment of its southern territories, Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced they had targeted the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain using a wave of drones. State media reported the Guards' warnings of ongoing clashes and a promises of a far more severe response should American aggression persist. According to Iranian authorities, the initial US strikes damaged local infrastructure, including two water tanks and a telecommunications tower in the coastal town of Sirik. This direct and volatile exchange marks one of the most perilous confrontations between Washington and Tehran in recent years, pushing regional security to a dangerous precipice.
