Authorities in Venezuela have foiled a terrorist operation at the US embassy in Caracas, stating that terrorists were attempting to plant an explosive device on the compound, President Maduro said.
Tensions have been mounting between the two countries in recent weeks, particularly after US forces targeted and destroyed four drug cartel boats in Caribbean waters.
According to Maduro, this alleged ‘false flag’ operation was intended to shift blame onto his party and government.
Maduro made these remarks during his weekly televised address. He said two informers had confirmed that a local terrorist group had placed an explosive device at the US embassy in Caracas, without naming them.
Jorge Rodriguez, leading Venezuela’s delegation for negotiations with the US, said Caracas had earlier warned Washington about the “serious threat.” He added, “The security measures have been reinforced at the particular diplomatic mission.”
Maduro said in his televised address that Washington’s diplomatic mission would be protected despite ongoing tensions with the US.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have sunk to their lowest point in history. President Trump has deployed warships and nuclear submarines to dismantle the drug cartel.
Caracas views the move as an attempt to topple the Maduro government and seize control of the country’s resources.
The US has carried out missile strikes on what Washington claims were boats belonging to the alleged drug cartel, killing 20 people.
In response to the strikes, Caracas has deployed thousands of troops across South America.
With ongoing tensions raising the possibility of military confrontation, terrorists or the drug mafia may attempt an attack targeting US citizens to provoke a warlike situation between the two nations.
