Venezuela has strongly rejected the new sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department on several Venezuelan officials. The Venezuelan government has labelled these sanctions as “unilateral, illegitimate, and illegal coercive measures,” and a “new crime of aggression.”
In a statement released on Thursday, Venezuela’s Foreign Affairs Ministry criticised the United States for demonstrating “total disregard for international law, the self-determination of peoples, and the democratic will of Venezuelans.” The ministry argued that the sanctions breach the agreements made between Venezuela and the United States in Qatar in September 2023.
The US Treasury Department announced sanctions against 16 Venezuelan officials across various government sectors earlier in the day. These officials are accused of obstructing democratic political participation and undermining the election process during Venezuela’s recent presidential elections.
Among those sanctioned are Caryslia Rodriguez, the President of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice, and Pedro Infante, the first Vice President of the National Assembly. The US Treasury Department claims these officials played a significant role in disrupting Venezuela’s democratic processes.
Venezuela's government contends that these actions by the US are an extension of aggressive policies that undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
The sanctions have further strained the already tense relations between the two nations, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the region.
