'We’re at war', says Trump as Iran talks unaffected by jet loss

The President’s comments follow a chaotic Friday in the Middle East, which saw two separate US aircraft go down under murky circumstances.

US President Donald Trump has insisted that the downing of an American military jet will have no bearing on potential negotiations with Tehran since such losses are an expected, if grim, reality of active combat. In his first public reaction to the incident, Trump appeared to shrug off concerns that the loss could scupper diplomatic channels, remarked bluntly: "No, not at all. No, it’s war. We’re in war."

The President’s comments follow a chaotic Friday in the Middle East, which saw two separate US aircraft go down under murky circumstances. The first, a McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle, was reportedly shot down over Iranian territory. While one crew member has been successfully recovered, the fate of the second remains a point of intense speculation; conflicting reports suggest the airman is either the subject of an ongoing search-and-rescue mission or has already been taken into Iranian custody.

Details regarding the second incident are even scarcer. A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that another combat aircraft had come down in the region, though it remains unclear whether it was struck by enemy fire or suffered a mechanical failure. Trump declined to elaborate on the status of the missing personnel during his interview, citing the sensitivity of the "complex and active" operations, while simultaneously hitting out at media coverage of the events.

Despite the President's public dismissal of the fallout, the diplomatic landscape looks increasingly bleak. As per The Wall Street Journal, mediation efforts — spearheaded by regional powers, including Pakistan — have hit a "dead end". Tehran has reportedly informed mediators in no uncertain terms that it is unwilling to attend scheduled talks in Islamabad, describing Washington’s current ceasefire demands as "unacceptable".

As the cost of war mounts and the main channel for peace is deadlocked, the White House is finding itself in an awkward position. The unwillingness of the Iranian regime to negotiate in the upcoming days indicates that, at least for the time being, the “cycle of war” that Trump mentioned is far from over.
