West deploying protective troops to Ukraine unacceptable: Kremlin

This statement came in response to more than two dozen nations pledging to form a "reassurance" force that would be deployed to the war-torn country once a peace agreement is finalised with Moscow.

The Kremlin’s official spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, on Friday said that Ukraine’s western backers definitely cannot deploy even a single protective trooper on Ukrainian soil without reaching a ceasefire.

These latest comments came after the “Coalition of the Willing” in the Paris Summit, led by France, along with 26 member states, pledged military support to Ukraine. The summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron was aimed at showing that the EU can independently provide security guarantees to Ukraine without US support.

Russia rejected the notion of Western security guarantees for Ukraine on Friday, after more than two dozen nations pledged to join a “reassurance” force to deploy in the war-torn country after a peace deal was reached with Moscow.

Dmitry Peskov rejected the idea of Western security guarantees for Ukraine, saying that foreign troops, especially from Europe and America, “definitely cannot” provide such assurances to Ukraine. While Macron, Starmer and Zelensky represented their countries in the summit, the United States was represented by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who also met with Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit.

Meanwhile, Trump said after receiving a call from the EU leaders that he would speak with the Russian president soon, with Dmitry Peskov confirming on Friday that arrangements for such could be organised swiftly.

The majority of 26 nations have pledged military support to facilitate post-war peace between Russia and Ukraine. Though some member states, including Germany and Hungary, have rejected any such idea, saying this will fuel the uncertainty rather than solve the crisis.

A German government official said, "Germany will decide on military involvement at the appropriate time once the framework conditions have been clarified.” Taking a similar line, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated that her country will not send troops to Ukraine but could help monitor any potential peace deal.

The Kremlin has already informed Ukraine's Western backers that it will not respect the deployment without Russian consent, and everyone would be considered a legitimate military target.
