Wildfires delay Oscars nominations, changes announced

In response to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy has extended the Oscar nomination voting deadline from January 12 to January 14. The nominations will now be announced on January 19.

The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the voting window for Oscar nominations. Initially set to close on January 12, the deadline has been pushed to January 14. The nominations will now be announced on January 19.

 

The Academy communicated these changes through CEO Bill Kramer. 

Expressing heartfelt condolences to those affected by the wildfires, Kramer said, “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you."

 

Alongside the nomination changes, additional scheduling shifts have been announced.

The International Feature Shortlist Screening, originally planned for January 8, has been postponed, and in-person events such as the Los Angeles Sound Branch Bake-Off and Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch Bake-Offs, set for January 11, have been cancelled.

 

The 2025 Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O'Brien, is scheduled for March 2.

 

Meanwhile, as the wildfires continue to rage, the Los Angeles Fire Department reports ongoing struggles with the blazes. At least five lives have been lost, with the new Sunset fire burning between Runyon Canyon and Wattles Park.

 

This fire now threatens the iconic Hollywood sign and the Dolby Theatre, home to the annual Oscars ceremony.
