Bangladesh's interim government chief, Muhammad Yunus, extended greetings to the Hindu community on Monday, marking Janmashtami with a reception dedicated to promoting interfaith harmony.

The event comes amid ongoing tensions following the recent political upheaval in the country.

Yunus met with key Hindu leaders and community members to address the recent violence that targeted Hindu businesses, properties, and temples.

This violence erupted after the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, an event that saw Hasina fleeing to India.

The unrest has raised concerns about the security and rights of minority communities in Bangladesh.

During the reception, Yunus emphasised the need for unity among all citizens of Bangladesh.

"There can't be any divisions among people in our country. We are equal citizens. The interim government is determined to protect the rights of every citizen of the country," Yunus declared.

His statement highlights the interim government's commitment to safeguarding the interests of all religious groups.

The interim chief adviser expressed his vision for a Bangladesh where every individual can practice their faith without fear and where religious sites are secure.

"Bangladesh is a large family where the responsibility of the government is to protect the rights of every citizen," Yunus stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The meeting was attended by prominent figures such as Bashudeb Dhar, President of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Swami Purnatmananda Maharaj, principal of the Ramkrishna Mission of Dhaka, and other Hindu leaders including Kajol Debnath and Monindra Kumar Nath. Dhar shared that Yunus emphasised the notion of a unified nation, aiming to "eliminate any sense of communalism."

The Hindu leaders, while acknowledging Yunus's commitment, also highlighted issues related to property grabbing and the damage to Hindu temples.

They welcomed Yunus's recent remarks at Dhakeshwari Mandir, a revered temple in Old Dhaka, which they believe will contribute to fostering a non-communal society.

Janmashtami, a public holiday in Bangladesh celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, saw thousands of Hindus participating in festivities at Dhakeshwari Temple and other religious sites, engaging in devotional songs, hymns, and prayers.
