Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a crucial phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, a day after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino confirmed in a post on X that Trump conducted the call from the Oval Office. Zelenskyy’s spokesman, Sergiy Nykyforov, also informed reporters about the discussion, highlighting its significance amid ongoing tensions.
During his conversation with Trump, Zelenskyy sought details of the US President’s dialogue with Putin, in which the Russian leader agreed to temporarily halt strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
However, Putin refused to commit to a full 30-day ceasefire, which Trump had proposed as a step towards a long-term peace agreement.
Despite the announcement of a temporary ceasefire, fresh hostilities erupted within hours. Both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of launching airstrikes that caused damage to key infrastructure, further complicating diplomatic efforts.
The call between Zelenskyy and Trump is seen as a pivotal moment in ongoing negotiations, as Ukraine continues to push for stronger international support to end the conflict.
