In a tragic incident in Zhuhai, China, a 62-year-old driver rammed his car into people exercising at the Xiangzhou Sports Center, killing at least 35 people and injuring 43 others.

The incident occurred on Monday, one day before the Zhuhai Airshow organised by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Authorities have detained the driver, identified by his family name, Fan, though it remains unclear whether the incident was intentional or accidental. According to emergency clinic personnel at Zhuhai's Shang Chong Hospital, several injured individuals were admitted but later discharged following treatment.

Videos circulating on social media show emergency responders performing CPR and assisting the injured as people were urged to leave the area.

The footage, shared by Chinese dissident and news blogger Li Ying (known as Teacher Li on X), shows dozens lying on the running track, with one woman saying, “my foot is broken.”

The Zhuhai hit-and-run received limited online coverage within China. A search on Weibo for the sports center yielded few posts, and some Chinese news reports from Monday night were reportedly removed from public view.

The Xiangzhou Sports Center, popular among local residents for recreational activities like running, soccer, and social dancing, announced its indefinite closure following the incident. This tragedy adds to a recent pattern of violent attacks targeting random civilians across China.

Last month, a knife attack at a Beijing school left five people injured, and in September, three people were killed in a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket.
