Changing hair colour can refresh your appearance, whether you prefer a subtle brown or blonde look, colourful streaks or multiple shades. However, chemical-based colouring products may affect hair health. Homemade dyes made from commonly available natural ingredients offer an alternative for those seeking a gentler hair makeover at home.
1. Beetroot dye
Beetroot can lend the hair a deep burgundy shade. Prepare the dye by mixing beetroot shavings with a carrier oil. Apply the mixture evenly to the hair and cover it with a plastic cap. Leave it on for about an hour before washing it off. For a deeper red tone, it can be kept on for a little longer.
2. Carrot dye
Carrot juice can add a red or orange tinge to the hair. Combine the juice with a hair oil and apply the mixture throughout the hair. Cover the head with a shower cap and leave the dye on for an hour before rinsing it during a shower.
3. Coffee dye
For a coffee-based rinse, mix one tablespoon of coffee with one cup of water. Boil the mixture until it reduces to one-third of its original quantity. Shampoo the hair as usual and use the prepared coffee decoction as the final rinse.
4. Henna dye
Henna can give the hair a maroonish shade. Mix henna with water in a bowl and leave the preparation overnight. The following day, apply it evenly from the roots through the lengths. Allow it to remain for two hours, or until it dries, and then wash it off with cold water.
5. Saffron dye
Saffron can be used as a natural option for colouring grey and white hair. Boil one tablespoon of saffron strands in two cups of water for approximately 20 minutes. Once the liquid has cooled, apply it to the hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner.
6. Cinnamon dye
A cinnamon-based mixture can give the hair a reddish hue and may be considered for black hair. To prepare it, combine half a cup of cinnamon powder with half a cup of regular conditioner. Apply the mixture to the hair, leave it for an hour and wash it off.
7. Food-colouring dye
Those looking for unconventional shades can try food colouring mixed with conditioner. Add a few drops of the preferred food colour to two to three teaspoons of conditioner. Apply the mixture to the hair and rinse it after an hour.
