How the Ambani wedding has flooded social media with memes

The mere timeline of the wedding and the sheer count of functions have had netizens amused. The wedding is slated between  July 12 to July 14 of this month, while the pre-engagement mehendi ceremony of the couple happened in January of 2023.

How the Ambani wedding has flooded social media with memes

What, the wedding is in July? That is pretty much how the social media chorus went when it was later revealed that all the glitzy hullabaloo lasting three days in Jamnagar was a ‘pre-pre-wedding’ event. The Ambanis have always been an object of interest, a subject of speculation and partly thanks to zero efforts made by the family itself in keeping things low-key.

Earlier this year, when the festivities started on March 1 and continued well till March 3, the social media, content creators, influencers had their fill of rich-poor memes, jokes on affluence and even the obscenely grand scale of events. As for the mainstream media outlets, they were almost forced to run “the recap of the wedding extravaganza.”

International celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, and back home Diljit joined into more applause, amazement and a lot of amusement.

A major chunk of the mass interest was plain black humour on drilling the message that beyond a point, excess of money is a total waste. As a Twitter user by the name @Joydas jokingly points out, “Admittedly, I am not rich and fashionable, so I can’t understand why at a premium event one guy will wear baniyan with his kachha showing, while the other guy will wear an attire made of scooter seat cover.” The post echoed the sentiments of many and garnered laughing emojis.

As for the two guys in question, they are none other than Justin Bieber, who has reportedly been paid Rs 83 crore to perform at  one of the pre-wedding functions and the other guy is the groom himself Anant Ambani who can be spotted in a maroon coloured leather jacket with grooves resembling the ones on a car or scooter’s seat cover.

Both the men had social media style-shaming them unabashedly. As for Justin Bieber, his now infamous look in a white vest and checkered boxers has sparked a debate.

Haven't they gotten married yet or it is still the sixth sangeet? Questioned a netizen, while bringing attention to the crazy and long timeline of the wedding.  After all, it was last year in January that Radhika Merchant’s first few pre-nuptial images hit the news. Back then it was a pre-engagement mehndi ceremony. Notably, the couple had a roka ceremony in the December of 2022!

Has anyone kept count, many wondered? “Maybe twelve,” conjectured yet another netizen, as several publications have run a timeline of the wedding ever since the grand celebrations at Jamnagar. On Instagram, there is even a fan page by the name of The Ambani Wedding with over 12k followers.

Anurag Kashyap’s daughter and YouTuber Aaliyah Kashyap even called the wedding, “a circus,” while moving on to admit that she enjoyed checking all the glimpses and was, “fascinated” by the lives of “rich people.”

Moving on, yet another influencer RJ Vidit, likened the process of selecting Bollywood celebrities for the Ambani sangeet to a teacher gesturing students while assigning tasks.

The three Khans (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan) dancing together was not missed by anyone as one of the memes pointed out that Bollywood can’t get them together in a film but all Mukesh Ambani has to do is snap his fingers.

While some labelled the sheer extravaganza, an overdose of glitzy guests, and international celebrities as “cringe,” others have marvelled at the size and the scale of celebrations.

From the outfits to celebrities, performers to the guest list, and of course number of events, every aspect has been overshadowed by the divisive opinions that largely took over the platform X. There are two sides of poverty, wealth, misery and luck.

On a serious note, and some food for thought, influencer Ranting Gola points out, “Shame on people celebrating income inequality in a country.” When the masses are consumed by glitzy distractions, do the serious issues get neglected in the process? Who wore what at Ambani's wedding shouldn’t be a point of discussion in a nation that should be obsessing over and fussing over healthcare, education and infrastructure.
