A dermatologist has recommended a simple three-step night skincare routine focused on cleansing, treatment and moisturising to help the skin recover from daily exposure to heat, dry air, pollution, sweat and other environmental stressors.
Dr Gurveen Waraich, MBBS, MD, from Garekars MD Dermatology Clinics, said night-time skincare plays the most important corrective role. While morning skincare is largely preventive, overnight care gives products time to address skin concerns and support rejuvenation.
1. Cleanse thoroughly
The first step is to wash the face properly at night to remove dirt, dust, pollutants, excess oil, sunscreen and makeup accumulated during the day. Night cleansing is particularly important because these substances remain on the skin for several hours if not removed.
Those who have worn makeup should cleanse their face twice, Dr Waraich advised. Double cleansing helps remove remaining residue and allows subsequent skincare products to work more effectively.
2. Apply a treatment product
The second step is intended for products that address specific skin concerns. Since the skin is less exposed to environmental stressors during sleep, these ingredients get time to work on correction and repair.
The dermatologist suggested choosing from retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid or glycolic acid, and hyaluronic acid, depending on individual skin type and needs. She also recommended assigning different active ingredients to different days of the week rather than using all of them together.
3. Finish with moisturiser
Moisturising completes the routine by replenishing hydration and helping seal in the products applied during the earlier steps. Dr Waraich suggested looking for formulations containing ceramides, panthenol or squalane.
The routine can be completed in about five minutes. Following these three steps consistently at night can help the skin remain hydrated and support a fresher, more radiant appearance by the next morning.
