MPs Sign Motion to Remove High Court Judge Varma.

Members of Parliament on Monday submitted a memorandum to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking the removal of High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma in connection with the ongoing cash discovery controversy.

A total of 145 Lok Sabha members have signed the impeachment motion against Justice Varma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. MPs from various parties, including the Congress, TDP, JDU, JDS, Jan Sena Party, AGP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), Lok Janshakti Party, SKP, CPM and others, are among the signatories.

Prominent MPs who signed the motion include Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, KC Venugopal and several others.

Earlier, Congress MP K Suresh confirmed that the party had extended its full support to the impeachment move and was coordinating with other INDIA bloc members.

“The INDIA bloc parties are also supporting this and are signing the letters to the Speaker,” Suresh said, speaking to the news agency in the national capital after attending an all-party meeting convened by the government ahead of the Parliament’s Monsoon session.

Suresh added that the Congress had already provided 40 signatures for the motion and was working with other opposition parties to meet the required tally for an impeachment motion to be tabled in Parliament.

The development follows the alleged discovery of burnt and half-burnt Rs 500 currency notes at Justice Varma’s official residence in the national capital on 15 March 2025. Parliament will now investigate the allegations against the sitting judge.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday confirmed that over 100 Members of Parliament had already signed the notice for Justice Varma’s removal, signalling cross-party consensus on the matter.

A judicial committee comprising three High Court judges, appointed by then Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, had earlier indicted Justice Varma and referred the matter to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The committee recommended Justice Varma’s removal after he reportedly refused to step down voluntarily.
