Centre rules out special Parliament session on Op Sindoor as Opposition clamours.

Leaders from 16 opposition parties have formally demanded a special session of Parliament to discuss India's Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The request was made through a joint letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a meeting of INDIA bloc parties held in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Prominent opposition parties represented at the meeting included the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT). The parties jointly signed the letter addressed to the prime minister, seeking a full parliamentary discussion on Operation Sindoor, particularly in light of recent security incidents in regions like Poonch, Uri, and Rajouri.

Senior leaders who attended the meeting included Congress’s Jairam Ramesh and Deependra Hooda, TMC’s Derek O'Brien, SP’s Ramgopal Yadav, RJD’s Manoj Jha, and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Raut. Although the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) did not attend the meeting due to the observance of M Karunanidhi's birth anniversary, it is among the signatories to the letter.

Other parties that signed the letter include the National Conference, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Communist Party of India (CPI), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Kerala Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not participate in the meeting but has announced it will submit a separate letter to Prime Minister Modi, echoing the demand for a special session. However, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) is not among the parties demanding the special parliamentary session.

Speaking to the media, TMC leader Derek O'Brien said, “Sixteen parties have written a letter to the Prime Minister demanding a special session of the Parliament. The letter talks about Poonch, Uri, Rajouri, and having a free discussion in Parliament. The government is responsible to the Parliament, and Parliament is responsible to the people. That’s why we are demanding a special session. The AAP will be writing directly to the PM tomorrow.”

The call for a special session comes amid heightened political attention following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Several opposition parties have repeatedly raised the demand in various forums, including an all-party meeting convened earlier to brief lawmakers on the progress and objectives of Operation Sindoor. The TMC has also proposed that the special session be scheduled in June, after the return of multi-party delegations currently traveling abroad to represent India’s stance against terrorism.
