Three members of a family of tourists lost their lives and one was critically injured when their Tata Sumo vehicle plunged into a deep gorge at Zojila Pass in Kargil district of Ladakh on Tuesday morning.
The tragedy occurred as the vehicle, registered as JK13B 9919, was travelling from Sonamarg to Zero Point Zojila for sightseeing.
The driver had stopped at Panimatha Zojila Pass to inspect a technical issue. While he was outside checking the vehicle it rolled down the slope and fell into the gorge.
Rescue teams, along with police, locals, and the civil administration, rushed to the scene but rescue efforts were hampered due to the difficult terrain.
A man and two women, members of the same family, were pronounced dead on the spot.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered by rescuers after a challenging operation that involved multiple teams.
Another passenger, who was severely injured, was initially taken to Baltal Base Camp Hospital and later referred to SKIMS Soura Hospital for advanced treatment.
She is reported to be in a critical condition.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.
