The total number of active Covid-19 cases in India now stand at 4,302 with nearly 300 fresh cases and two more Covid-related deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Seven people have died of Covid this year. The highest number of cases have been reported from Kerala.
The surge in Covid-19 cases this year is driven by four variants, LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1. NB.1.8.1 is a new Covid-19 sub-variant that has been detected in India. The WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution has designated this variant as “Variant Under Monitoring”, one with significant changes in virus characteristics but whose epidemiological impact remains unclear. At least one sample of this variant has been submitted to India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium INSACOG from Tamil Nadu.
Despite the fresh spike in Covid infections, the fatality rate remains low. Most Covid patients are displaying mild symptoms. Like other viruses, SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate. Some of these new variants may spread more easily or evade immunity to a considerable extent.
