4 dead, 13 missing during Ganesh idol immersion in Maharashtra

Four people drowned and 13 others went missing during Ganesh idol immersion processions in Maharashtra.

On Sunday, police confirmed that at least four people have drowned and 13 others are missing following Ganesh idol immersion ceremonies in various districts of Maharashtra.


In Pune district's Chakan area, four individuals were swept away in separate incidents. "Two men were swept away in the Bhama river at Waki Khurd and another one at Shell Pimpalgaon. Another person slipped into a well at Birwadi in Pune rural," an official said. He added that two bodies have been recovered, and search operations are ongoing for the other two individuals.


In Nanded district, three people were swept away in a river at Gadegaon. According to the police, "One of them was later rescued and search was on for the other two persons."

Similar incidents were reported in Nashik, Jalgaon, Thane, and Amravati. Officials in Nashik stated that four people drowned during the immersion process, and one body was recovered in Sinnar. In Jalgaon, three people were swept away in separate incidents, and efforts are underway to trace them. In Thane district, three people were swept away, with one body recovered so far. Police also reported that a man in Amravati is feared to have drowned during the immersion.


Officials have noted that due to continuous rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, rivers and other water bodies are swollen. In response, state disaster response teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed.
