On Tuesday morning, five coaches of a Puducherry-bound passenger train derailed near Villupuram railway station in Tamil Nadu. However, the loco pilot quickly stopped the train, preventing a major accident.
Railway staff confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. The cause of the derailment will be determined after an inquiry is completed.
Officials mentioned that engineers and staff were sent to the site to begin repairs, while the railway team worked to clear the tracks so other trains could pass.
The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train, which had left Villupuram at 5:25 am, was crossing a curve when the coaches derailed. The train, which covers about 38 kilometers, was quickly stopped by the loco pilot.
The Villupuram Railway Police have started a detailed investigation into the incident.
Just last week, a goods train had derailed near Srinavaspuram in Andhra Pradesh's Palnadu district. The train was on its way to the Vishnupuram Rashi Cement Factory. Due to that incident, trains on the Guntur-Hyderabad route were diverted via Vijayawada.
Earlier in October 2023, a major accident took place near Chennai when 12 coaches of the Bagmati Express derailed. The train, which was traveling from Mysuru to Darbhanga, entered the wrong track after receiving a green signal.
The incident injured 19 people but there were no life-threatening injuries. The train had 1,360 passengers on board at the time.
