The results of a recent global survey show that almost four out of five people in India support making actions by government officials or leaders of large businesses that cause serious damage to nature and the climate illegal.

The survey, called the Global Commons Survey 2024, was carried out by Ipsos UK and sponsored by Earth4All and the Global Commons Alliance (GCA). It also found that nearly three out of five Indians (61%) believe that the government is taking sufficient action to address climate change and environmental harm.

Furthermore, 90% of the respondents expressed concern about the current state of nature, and 73% feel that the Earth is heading towards critical environmental "tipping points". Additionally, 57% believe that new technologies can solve environmental problems without requiring significant changes in individual lifestyles, while 54% think that many warnings about environmental risks are exaggerated.

Nearly 80% of Indians believe that human health and well-being are closely linked to the health and well-being of nature. Moreover, 77% said that nature is already too damaged to meet human needs in the long run.

The survey polled 1,000 participants aged 18 to 75 across 18 G20 countries and four non-G20 countries.

The survey follows recent notable legislative changes, including Belgium's recognition of ecocide as a federal crime earlier this year, as well as similar laws in Chile and France. Bills proposing ecocide as a crime have also been introduced in Brazil, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, and Scotland, among others.
