Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his greetings on Hindi Diwas, urging citizens to celebrate the language not merely as a tool of communication but as a living heritage.
“Heartfelt greetings to all on Hindi Diwas. Hindi is not merely a medium of communication, but a vibrant heritage of our identity and values. On this occasion, let us all together resolve to enrich Hindi along with all Indian languages and to pass them on to the coming generations with pride,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that the growing respect for Hindi on the global stage was a matter of “pride and inspiration”.
Hindi Diwas, marked annually on September 14, commemorates the day in 1949 when the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of India’s official languages. It is observed across the country through literary events, school competitions and cultural programmes.
The observance has contemporary relevance as well. Beyond honouring heritage, it seeks to instil pride in younger generations, bridge linguistic divides in a multilingual nation, and adapt the language for fields such as science, technology, and digital communication.
