AAP leaders Mann, Atishi meet EC over Yamuna remarks

Atishi warns of water shortages in Delhi due to pollution.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, held a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Tuesday to address the pressing issue of water quality in the Yamuna River.

The leaders expressed grave concerns over the rising levels of ammonia in the river, which they claim is severely affecting Delhi’s water supply.

Atishi highlighted the dire consequences of the continued contamination, warning that it could lead to the shutdown of several water treatment plants in the capital. This, she stated, would leave nearly 30 per cent of Delhi without access to clean water.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Atishi said the discussion focused on the worsening condition of Yamuna’s water quality and its impact on Delhi residents.

She pointed out that the ammonia levels in the Yamuna, particularly in water flowing from Haryana, had reached toxic proportions. She added that if the contamination persists, many water treatment plants would be forced to halt operations.

Atishi further suggested forming a joint task force involving officials from both Haryana and Delhi to monitor the ammonia levels in the river. This initiative, she explained, would ensure accurate data on the extent of pollution entering Delhi from Haryana and pave the way for corrective measures.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann echoed similar concerns, emphasising the urgency of resolving the issue. He referred to comments made by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who had earlier spoken on the Yamuna water crisis.

Mann argued that Saini’s remarks were not merely opinions but admissions of the ongoing problems.

Meanwhile, Saini took a swipe at AAP’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, during a public rally. Saini criticised Kejriwal for failing to deliver on his promises to clean the Yamuna, despite being in power for nearly a decade.

He claimed that the people of Delhi were disillusioned with AAP and accused the party of making false promises instead of delivering results.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has also raised concerns over the rising ammonia levels, stating that the city’s water treatment plants can only handle ammonia concentrations of up to 1-2 ppm. Beyond this threshold, the facilities struggle to provide safe drinking water to the city’s residents.
